![]() L Type 12/50 Brooklands Sports Model The caption below reads "12/50 Brooklands Sports Model as supplied to Police Authorities." Apparently, these powerful cars were used to carry bulky radio transmitters installed in the rear seat area. As a consequence, the roof was raised and the hood frame served as an antenna. |
The 1926 chassis with quarter-elliptic rear springs as for the J and K types but fitted with the then new, higher revving Meadows 4ED was called either an L or an M type. Lea-Francis' first really sporting car, those designated the L Type 12/50 Brooklands Sports Model had a high compression cylinder head, two carburettors and a different camshaft, and were capable of over 70mph. Most L types were fitted with four- or two-seater sports bodies, and all had wire wheels. 174 L types were built of which two have survived in the Club, although much altered; the high mortality rate was mainly due to the back axle being unable to cope with the power of the 4ED. |

Usually fitted with a single carburettor and designated the 12/40, the M type was still faster than J and K types on the same chassis with the slower revving 4EC and 4EB engines. Most were two-seater or four-seater tourers or saloons. 236 M types were built of which possibly six have survived, four owned by Club members. | ||||
