Perhaps better described as a "concept study," the Lea-Francis Limousine was designed as a purpose-built limousine as opposed to a "stretched" saloon car. Inspired by the need to fill the void left by the discontinued Daimler DS420 Limousine, Barrie Price's venture envisaged a partnership with Coventry-based Park Sheet Metal Company. Barrie had good reason to select the Park Sheet Metal Company as they also manufactured the steel bodies of the Daimler DS420 under contract for over 25 years. The chassis (pictured below) was designed by Hugh Price MSc and is a substantial tubular steel chassis with four-wheel independent suspension by torsion bars and wishbones. The body styling was by Nick Shakespeare, a design consultant from Warwick, while Barrie Price is responsible for body engineering and detail work. The first chassis was displayed at the International Motor Show in October 1996. Power and transmission for the Lea-Francis Limousine was to be sourced from existing manufacturers, and as the chassis was designed to accommodate the Jaguar V12 engine, there is ample space for a variety of engine choices. The Lea-Francis limousine remains on the drawing board, but is unlikely to become a reality. |
